Bringing home hermit crabs might seem simple at first — after all, they’re small, quiet pets. But if you’ve already started researching, you probably discovered something surprising: hermit crabs actually need specialized care to stay healthy and live long lives.
That’s exactly why I made this beginner’s checklist.
Whether you’re setting up your very first crabitat or trying to avoid common mistakes, this guide covers the essentials every new hermit crab owner should know before bringing crabs home.
Many pet stores market hermit crabs as “easy” pets that can survive in tiny cages with painted shells and sponge water dishes. Unfortunately, that setup is usually stressful, unhealthy, & often fatal for them.
With proper care, hermit crabs can live for decades. The key is creating an environment that mimics their natural habitat.
This checklist helps break everything down into manageable steps so beginners don’t feel overwhelmed. I also made a printable guide available for download.

Petsmart has a lot of safe foods for hermit crabs!

I recently created a fun video tutorial showing
how to make hermit crab vacation cups-
a simple and convenient way to prepare meal cups
for hermit crabs while owners are busy or away
for short periods of time. The vacation cups
will last about a week in the tank.
You can freeze them for a longer shelf life as well.

One thing I do to keep bugs out of my hermit crab tank is to tape mouse sticky glue traps around
the sides and back of my tank (underneath the heater.) If any bugs crawl up my tank, they will stick to the glue trap. Learned this trick after getting ants in my tank once! It seems to work pretty well!
